All That Jazz –Broadway glitter comes to Klosters

Klosters Music is showing the film “Chicago”, winner of six Oscars. The memorable music will be played live by the City Light Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kevin Griffiths.

Chicago in the 1920s. Singer Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is arrested for a double murder. In prison she meets her biggest fan Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger), who has shot her lover. The two plan a comeback on the show stage – with the help of attractive lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere). A fierce rivalry develops between the two women. Their hopes are pinned on Billy Flynn, because this heartthrob has never lost a trial – otherwise the death penalty awaits them in the women’s prison.  Flynn stages a media spectacle and turns the offenders into victims. In the end, nothing can stand in the way of Roxie Hart’s dream musical career with her former idol Velma Kelly.

Rob Marshall’s film adaptation of the 2002 musical “Chicago” with the original songs by John Kander and the additional, sensual film score composed by Danny Elfman was awarded six Oscars, including Best Film and Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart and hip-hop legend Queen Latifah as prison warden Matron “Mama” Morton were also nominated. The special thing about the film adaptation is that it frequently switches between dream and reality: All the actors and actresses sing their own musical numbers.

The City Light Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kevin Griffiths will make “Chicago” groove in the concert hall of the Arena Klosters and bring the gripping sex-and-crime story to life with seductive strings and piercing brass. The forty-piece orchestra includes a jazz band with piano, guitar, electric bass and drums. And a saxophone group provides the authentic sound. The orchestra plays the music live to the original voices from the film soundtrack. The evening is divided into two acts – from the sparkling overture “All That Jazz”, when the cool, vibrant Chicago jazz casts its spell for the first time, to the glamorous finale, in which Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones dance and sing to “Hot Honey Rag” in their own musical show. Let’s go to the Chicago of the 1920s!
