New Year's Concert | from Venice via Buenos Aires
GABETTA CONSORT
Andrés Gabetta, Violine
Marina Viotti, Sopran
Mario STEFANO Pietrodarchi, Bandoneon
Three composers, three centuries, one shared passion. Venice’s Baroque splendour meets the fiery nights of Buenos Aires.
First, Vivaldi: in the cantata “Cessate, ormai cessate” a spurned lover laments. In the aria “Sovente il sole” the solo violin traces the sun’s rays, whilst the violin concerto “Grosso Mogul” soars to new heights with extravagant ornamentation and daring cadenzas that made Vivaldi a legend even during his lifetime.
The 20th-century response: Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango”, with which he broke free from classical tango to create Tango Nuevo. The bandoneon flickers like a flame over the pulsating rhythms, drawing the musicians along with it in a virtuoso display.
In between, Luca Salvador bridges the gap: his “Ouverture: Tango-Baroque” brings Vivaldi’s violin concerto and the bandoneon together as if they had always belonged with one another – just like the award-winning mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti and the Baroque ensemble Gabetta Consort, conducted by Andrés Gabetta, who between will reveal a rich palette of timbres.
