SIMPLY MAGICAL

When the huntsman Max in Carl Maria von Weber’s opera “Der Freischütz” casts the magic bullets together with the sinister figure of Kaspar in the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf’s Glen) at midnight in order to win the hand of his beloved Agathe in a shooting contest, something is not quite right. Simply magical also is the way in which Augustin Hadelich plays the violin. However, there is no black magic at work here, but a very bright, radiant kindof mystery. The former child prodigy, who grew up in Italy, has long since matured into a major performer who brings out all the emotional depth in Tchaikovsky’s highly virtuoso violin concerto. Under French conductor Jérémie Rhorer, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is an equal partner to the German-American violinist based in New York. After the interval, the orchestra dedicates itself to Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, which is reminiscent of Mozart in its grace and esprit.
