The elegant swan, embodied by the violoncello, swims in lonely circles. The lions roar in the piano before setting off on a stately march.
The great zoological fantasy, as Camille Saint-Säens called his “Carnival of the Animals”, was performed only once in a house concert during his lifetime. The composer feared that he would lose his serious reputation. It is certainly amusing when we hear chickens brought to life by the cackling of the strings, when turtles dance Jacques Offenbach’s wild cancan in the viola in slow motion or when the double bass mimes an elephant. At our family concert in the Old Schoolhouse Klosters, children and adults can meet all these animals and more. You’ll maybe even find an ibex next to the cuckoo and kangaroo.
